Dawlish Rail Resilience Project Phase 5
Back in 2014 a catastrophic storm washed away the train line at Dawlish, and caused a cliff collapse further along the line between Holcombe and Teignmouth. Whilst the work on the sea wall to protect Dawlish has been completed and been successful, the final phase of the project, designed to protect the railway from cliff falls between Parson's Tunnel and Teignmouth has yet to be started. It was a cliff fall at this location that shut the railway line for 8 weeks, long after the breach at Dawlish had been fixed. Due to reasons that have never been fully explained, this phase was put on hold, and in the recently announced road and rail funding commitments from the Government the Dawlish project was noticeably absent. We don't agree with the Government's approach of keeping the area under review, just one storm event could cut off everything west of Dawlish for weeks.
