2026: Week 17 - Attacks at Golders Green
This week saw the terrifying attack in Golders Green, where two people were stabbed. The incident has been classified as an act of terror by the Police.
This is absolutely horrifying and my heart goes out to the victims and their loved ones. Week after week, we are seeing British Jews attacked, intimidated and persecuted. That is a damning indictment of the scale of antisemitism in this country. The Government is right to offer additional funding to boost police patrols and protections around synagogues, schools and community centres to offer further assurances to the Jewish Community. What they need to do now is to deliver a plan to tackle antisemitism at its root and ensure everyone feels safe in this country, regardless of their identity or religion.
Britain has long held values of inclusivity and acceptance, which are still embedded throughout the country. In recent years however the UK has experienced repeated attempts to sow division, whether it be in subjects of race, religion, class; the list goes on. Sadly anything that is perceived as “different” can become a target. Those that seek to create and grow these culture divides are often emboldened by actions that are becoming more and prevalent in the US under the Trump Administration. As a country that describes tolerance and inclusivity within its values, the UK must not allow these unfavourable ideals to take root.
As a result of this, British democracy is under more serious threat than at any point in my lifetime, from powerful individuals outside our country who are trying to destroy it – Trump, Musk and Putin, amongst other more shady characters. Alarmingly, there are indications that there are dangerous forces within our political landscape who are aiding and abetting this destruction.
To address this the Lib Dems have called for a dedicated investigation into political interference by the Trump Administration. As a party we have outlined a package of measures aimed at protecting British democracy which will be pursued through amendments to the Representation of the People Bill. Our democracy must be defended now, or risk losing it forever.
In other news from Westminster, we saw the end of the current Parliamentary session this week, Parliament is officially closed for business until 13th May when there will be the State Opening. The King will be in attendance and will outline the Government’s legislative agenda in the King’s Speech, thereby officially opening the second Parliamentary session since the 2024 election.
In the meantime, I will be spending this time in the constituency, my diary is filling up quickly with meetings, surgeries and visits, so I hope I will get the chance to chat with a variety of constituents over the coming days.
